On Saturday 16th December, we held our annual Winter Festival, celebrating the fabulous work of our Deptford office in 2017, and giving our beneficiaries a chance to unwind, eat lots of delicious food, and enjoy some wonderful entertainment!
In our Women’s Tea Corner, we have discussed health and wellbeing, and the women have talked at great length about the importance of home cooking, sharing with us recipes which are important to them and their culture. As such, we thought we’d centre the afternoon around food, so we gave everyone the opportunity to bring along their favourite dish. Our staff, beneficiaries and volunteers did not disappoint, and we enjoyed a huge spread from across the world, including Aush Soup, Samosas, and Chocolate Brownies!
After a sit down meal, we were in for a treat, as children from a local theatre school, Young and Talented, sung and danced along to Justin Timberlake’s Can’t Stop the Feeling, as well as Mariah Carey’s Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town, putting us all in a Christmassy mood! Next, they taught our kids a thing or two about drama, holding a workshop on emotion and facial expressions, which everyone thoroughly enjoyed.
We were privileged enough to have Majid Adin – an illustrator, whose wonderful animation skills can be seen in the official video of Elton John’s Rocket Man – come and join the party. Majid used his skills to draw beautiful portraits and hilarious caricatures of our guests, which they were able to take home. Everyone was captivated by his drawings, and we were hugely grateful for his presence, thanks Majid!
Last but certainly not least, we had a workshop led by the wonderful Tamara Astor, who brought such energy and fun to the day, that the children will be talking about it for months to come – think musical statues, bubbles and lots and lots of dancing!
The event was a huge success and a great way for us to celebrate with our beneficiaries as well as to thank our hard-working volunteers for all they have done this year!
Here are some of the comments from the day:
‘So great to see women and children come together in such a warm and friendly atmosphere’ – Rabia Nasimi (Development Manager)
‘Absolutely amazing afternoon of fun and games, food and laughs. It was great to see so many familiar faces and some new faces too! I can’t wait until the next one!! Thank you to Lilly and Amy for organising the event.’
‘The winter celebration organised by Lily and Amy was fun, ran smoothly and managed to bring everyone together – including children and some new faces. The atmosphere was happy and relaxed, and everyone seems to have enjoyed it. I can’t wait for the next event, which I’m sure will be another huge success!’
