Growing up in a close-knit community, I was constantly surrounded by people helping others. This exposure to kindness sparked my passion for making a difference. I found myself drawn to politics, possibly influenced by my experience studying A-Level Politics, and it became clear that this was the path through which I wanted to effect change.
In 2023, I began studying Politics, Philosophy, and Economics at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London. This course allowed me to explore global issues with a particular focus on Asia and the Middle East. I began to understand the complexities of global politics, and as I learned about the Taliban’s devastating takeover of Afghanistan, I became more deeply invested in understanding the plight of Afghan families. I learned about the UK’s evacuation efforts but wondered how refugees were supported once they arrived. That’s when I discovered the Afghanistan and Central Asian Association (ACAA), a charity dedicated to helping Afghan families rebuild their lives. Their work was inspiring, and I knew I wanted to be a part of it.
In March 2024, I joined the ACAA as a Political Communications Intern. From day one, I was given a level of responsibility that surpassed my expectations. One of my first projects involved creating a daily media report, summarizing global news relevant to the charity, which helped us craft timely responses to political events. Whether drafting press releases or managing social media, I was actively shaping how the charity communicated its message to the world.
I also had the privilege of working on the ACAA Summer Festival, an event celebrating Afghan culture. In the lead-up, I helped with media communications and outreach, ensuring the festival would be a success. On the day, I worked the ticket desk, assisting a steady flow of guests and watching the event come alive with music, food, and performances. It was a busy but rewarding experience, and in between my tasks, I had the chance to enjoy the incredible Afghan food and vibrant live performances.
Another highlight of my time at the ACAA was attending the opening of their new office in Liverpool, a testament to the charity’s growing impact. Beyond these large events, my daily work involved helping refugees with practical challenges like filling out Universal Credit forms, finding housing, or contacting authorities. These interactions reminded me that even small acts of assistance can have a significant impact on someone’s life.
What truly defines the ACAA is its unwavering focus on people. The charity provides more than just support; it offers a sense of belonging for some of society’s most vulnerable individuals, many of whom have endured unimaginable hardship. Its core mission of integration and community building ensures that refugees and asylum seekers are given a real chance to rebuild their lives and thrive.
The dedication and passion of the ACAA’s staff and volunteers have inspired me. They are a testament to the power of compassion and collective action. My time with the ACAA has been transformative, reinforcing my belief that, through political engagement and community work, real change can be achieved.
