Empowering Future Voters: Dr. Nasimi Visits Chiswick Schoolto advocate Youth Democratic Engagement.

Apr 3, 2025

In a talk filled with vibrance and curiosity, Dr. Nasimi, Founder and Director of the
Afghanistan and Central Asian Association (ACAA), visited Chiswick School to speak with
Sixth Form students about democratic participation, electoral rights, and the power of youth
in shaping the future.

As part of ACAA’s vision of civic empowerment and community engagement, the visit aimed
to encourage young people to understand and exercise their rights within the UK’s
democratic system. Students learned essential knowledge about the voting processes,
including who is eligible to vote, how to register, what documents are needed, and the
different access to the voting system.

The talk was interactive, aiming to facilitate question-and-answer dialogue, allowing
students to raise real concerns and express their understanding of the electoral system.
Numerous students showed interest in political participation as their future career path,
others asked questioned in how to become more informed and active citizens. Dr Nasimi
highlighted the importance of voting which shapes policies that directly affect young
people’s futures.

Drawing on Dr. Nasimi’s own experiences, he informed the students about electoral
processes in Afghanistan, emphasising the contrasts between democratic freedoms in the
UK, and the restrictions abroad. This conversation led to a deeper understanding of the
challenges and limitations faced by many in authoritarian states, reminding students of the
harsh reality that millions faced around the world. The Afghans are not only unable to vote,
but the fundamental human rights and freedom to move and speak are denied. Students
now understand the importance of protecting and participating in democracy whenever
possible.

Dr. Nasimi also shared the recent honour of receiving an MBE from His Majesty King Charles
III in recognition of his work for refugees and integration. He wants the student to not only
see this as a personal achievement, but also a symbol of possibility for change. Students
discovered that ordinary individuals who decide to get involved, speak up and take action
are the first to bring about significant changes.

ACAA continues to work with local schools and institutions to promote understanding,
enlarge refugee voices and construct a more inclusive and equal society. Our emphasis on
youth shaping the future stands at the centre of our mission, where positive changes are
always made possible.
